Estelle Getty, Beloved Golden Girls Actress, Dies at 84

Image of Golden Girls - Season Two (Estelle Getty: Bottom Right) © PriceGrabberEstelle Getty, whose caustic wit made her role as Sophia on the Golden Girls one of the most popular characters in television history, has died at the age of 84.

Getty died of advanced dementia at her home on Hollywood Boulevard. Getty worked hard for her success -- prior to her role as Sophia on the Golden Girls, she spent 40 years working low-paying clerical jobs while making a name for herself as a stage actress. It took her three auditions to earn the role of Sophia because the producers didn't think she seemed old enough to play the part.

My heart goes out to Getty's surviving family members, which include two sons and two siblings. She was an inspiration to all of us and brought us many moments of laughter and joy.

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note that I’ve checked out the contest described by Stephanie and it appears to be legitimate. The Alzheimer’s Research Trust is the UK’s leading research charity for Alzheimer’s and other dementias. It’s free to enter the contest and entries raise money for dementia research. So, if this is your kind of thing — check it out.

Thanks!
Carrie
