A Tribute to "Slingin'" Sammy Baugh
You don't have to be a football fan to appreciate the greatness of "Slingin'" Sammy Baugh, arguably the greatest football player in the history of the game.Baugh died earlier this month at the age of 94. His son reported that Baugh had been battling Alzheimer's disease and had also developed double pneumonia.
The legendary quarterback for the Redskins revolutionized the forward pass and had been the last surviving member of the inaugural class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
As I was reading about Baugh's accomplishments, I was amazed to learn that during his 16-year career (1937-1952), he set 13 NFL passing records -- two of which still stand today, over 50 years after his tenure. Baugh's versatility was awe-inspiring: He remains the only player to ever lead the NFL in passing, punting, and defensive interceptions in the same season.
Although Baugh experienced memory loss during his final years, our memory of him as a prolific football player will not fade. His talent was timeless.
My warmest thoughts go out to the Baugh family.
