What's the Story on Coconut Oil and Alzheimer's Disease?

By , About.com GuideMay 6, 2012

Follow me on:

If you've been following Alzheimer's research, you may have heard about the use of coconut oil in treating Alzheimer's disease. A physician in Florida has written about her experience with using coconut oil to treat her husband's symptoms of dementia, noting that he showed significant improvement after she added it to his diet.

So the question from a few of my readers is: Do you recommend coconut oil to treat Alzheimer's? In response, I conducted a review of the literature published online and summarized the information I found here:

Coconut Oil: Is It Effective in Treating Alzheimer's Disease?

If you've tried using coconut oil in response to symptoms of Alzheimer's, feel free to comment below if you found it to be helpful or not helpful.

Please note that this information should not be considered medical advice. Any supplements or other dietary changes should be discussed with the physician responsible for the care of the person with Alzheimer's disease.

I have to make a comment on the mentioned article. It appears the advertisement block above the header mentions the sale of coconut oil for sale. Is this coincidence or what?

We started my mom on coconut oil about a month ago………the improvements we have seen are:
she no longer has to be taken down to lunch at the assisted living she is at, she meets the staff down there.
she is more social at the assisted living now
my brother asked her where her newspaper was, she never knows where it is………she pulled it out of her drawer and handed it to him.
she has more recall than before, in a conversation.
we are not going to cure her, she still gets paranoid, confused and delusional, especially at night/sundowning, but we will take what we can get………it has improved her quality of life some and makes us feel like we might have more time with her!!

My husband has been using Coconut Oil for a few months now. When he first started, we could tell if he missed a day. He didn’t have nearly as much energy and just seemed much slower over all. We wouldn’t think of stopping him using it. We don’t know how much worse he would be if we stopped, so needless to say we will continue to mix coconut oil in certain foods. One of the best ways we have found is to put it in the little plastic containers of fruit that comes 4 in a package. We just pour the fruit in a bowl and add coconut oil, 2 or 3 times a day. What gets us is that the Doctors (neurologists) don’t even want to talk to you about it or discuss the book. It makes you wonder………..

Regardless of what the doctor who was mentioned in Snopes has to say, I would try coconut oil in a heartbeat…what can it hurt? Remember that just because a person is selling a book doesn’t mean that what they’re saying isn’t true…if I were the first person to find something that might help dementia and I wrote a book about it and made some money off of it, that wouldn’t suddenly devalue the possible treatment…it would only mean that I wrote a book and made some money.
And just because clinical trial protocol didn’t happen here, it doesn’t mean the coconut oil isn’t beneficial. My niece has Primary Progressive Aphasia and was getting Etanercept (Enbrel) injections in her neck every 3 weeks…there was no clinical trial protocol done, but I guarantee you the injections helped! My niece even noticed the difference and said her head felt more clear…and in the doctor’s office we met 2 other patients and saw for ourselves the difference in them before and after they had their injections. It was absolutely unbelievable! Unfortunately, the shots lost their power after several months, but they were magic for awhile.
I just don’t want anyone to not try coconut oil because of the lack of clinical trial protocol…it can’t hurt to try it and maybe it will even help…best of luck to those of you willing to try!

I will definitely try this for my husband as nothing else is helping him and he is deteriorating by the day. Coconut Oil is useful for so many things so why not give it a try. I am certainly going to start him on it immediately.

Documenting my family’s journey through a personal blog at thecureforad.com
After learning about Dr. Newport’s results, we had to try with my dad. We have seen some definite changes in his focus. Only been on it for about 3 wks, not everyone I’ve read is having immediate results, but some people are, and that is awesome! I think Dr. Newport said in her interview that the most significant changes, she didn’t see until around the 3rd month? I believe. The thing is, there is nowhere but down with this horrible disease, so if there is something natural that won’t hurt, and can only help other areas of your health, along with *hopefully* improving symptoms of diseases such as Alzheimers, such a shame not to even try it.

I’ve been hearing a lot about the coconut oil benefits for Alzheimer’s. Although I’m still not sure if it’s true, I would still love to include coconut oil to my mom and dad’s diet. They don’t have Alzheimer’s but because they are already in their senior stage, they were sometimes having memory gap. So I do think coconut oil is ok for them. Am I right?

My mom has Alzheimer’s. In which has progressed greatly in a very very short time. My sister, Vanessa has been caring for her steadily, with running mom to the Doctor’s, hosp. & other appointments. When one of her friends told her to try Coconut Oil. Well this is my mom’s 3rd day, & improvements have been noticed already. My mom is no longer stumbling on her words, & is remembering names. She is talking now with far more confidence. I want to thank Vanessa’s friend, for suggesting it to my sister, & Vanessa for doing SO MUCH for my mom, & Donna, my older sister, who also helps out lots with mom. I highly recommend the Non-Hydrogenated Virgin Coconut Oil for anyone with memory loss.
WE LOVE YOU MOM!! <3 <3 <3 <3
