Patty Berg Pioneer Golfer Has Died From Alzheimer's Disease Complications

Patty Berg the pioneer golfer has died. Ms Berg had Alzheimer's disease and died from complications brought about by the disease.

Patty Berg who was 88 years old announced in 2004 that she had Alzheimer's disease. She died in a hospice in Fort Myers Florida. She was known for her energy, a good sense of humor and her great love of golf. She was one of the 13 founders of the Ladies Professional Golf Association and was their first elected president.

Born in Minneapolis in 1918 Patty Berg became a professional golfer in 1940 at a time when the role of women was very different to that of today. She joined the Marine Corps and was a lieutenant during World War II. Ms Berg won numerous golf and sports titles and and was an ambassador for golf and an inspiration to many people.

Patty Berg had overcome a number of health problems including the removal of a cancerous stomach tumor in 1971, major hip surgery in 1980 and back surgery in 1989. A Regional Medical Center was named in her honor in 1993, the Patty Berg Cancer Center in Southwest Florida.
