Nursing Homes or other Care Facilities?
Don't make a snap decision. As the caregiver you should know that only by visiting different care facilities will you begin to understand the range and different standards of care offered in this area. Talk to staff and the friends who visit as well as other residents. Visit at different times of day. Try to find a
nursing home or care facility that treats your loved one with care and consideration and certainly no less than you as a caregiver would wish to see someone treated. Staff need to be capable but they also take on the role of family and friend - do you see this in them?
Walk Away from Nursing Homes or Care Facilities If
..
The nursing home or care facility smells of stale urine. When I worked in this area as an agency nurse (so I visited and worked in many
different places) this always reflected the values and investment by the owners of the facility had and the commitment of the
care staff and caregivers.
If the nursing home or care facility is dirty, shabby and run down.
If caregivers do not receive regular training and education.
If the nursing home or care facility does not allow you to visit when you need to.
If the local community does not recommend the facility think very carefully. Find out as much as you can. Why do lots of people feel that way? Is there evidence of abuse or suspected abuse? Are caregivers backgrounds checked e.g. criminal records and previous work places. If that is the case you must definitely walk away.
