Finding the Best Person for the Job
There are a number of agencies and independent individuals, caregivers, nurses, who can assist you to lead as independent a life as possible within your own home. This type of care has many advantages. For example, you do not need to move, you make most of the decisions on what you do and when, you are surrounded by the familiar both at home and in your community. If you are considering this type of care there are a number of important questions you need to ask the agency and/or the individual who is going to work for and with you.
What sort of experience or qualifications do they have? Do they have experience of working with people who have dementia?
What type of training have they undertaken, how regularly and have they the certificates to back up the claims?
What times are they available? Are they available for set days each week or are they flexible in their work pattern? Do those hours suit you?
Will the same person come each day? Who would substitute and what do you know about them? Does the agency try to send the same caregivers to provide continuity?
If there is a problem who can I contact at the agency? What are the closing times? Is anyone on-call?
Will this type of care suit my needs and my relatives needs?
What will this service cost me? Do I have to commit and if so why?
