I was born and raised in Joplin, Missouri. In 1952, in the middle of the Korean War, I enlisted in the United States Air Force. After a year of training in electronics and radio operation, I was fortunate enough not to be sent to Korea; instead, I was assigned to a Royal Air Force Station (operated by the United States Air Force Security Service) a few miles outside of Edinburgh, Scotland. It was two years after my arrival in Scotland that I first met Rita. Our relationship grew, and two and a half years later, we were married in Riverside, California.
