Surprisingly, Rita took little time to adapt to her new environment. It was definitely more difficult for me than for her. To remedy that, I set up a schedule for myself to be with her during both the noon and evening meals, as well as time preceding and following the meals. I spent four to five hours a day there, every day. I followed that schedule for the three years that she was there. Our times together were precious, and we made the most out of every minute together. The facility had its own walkways and gardens, and we spent a lot of our time outside. When we couldn't do that, we would listen to music together or visit with other residents.
