There is some evidence that challenging behavior, such as aggression, has a genetic basis. Equally, injury or damage to the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe, the amygdala or the hypothalamus of the brain can result in aggression. Testosterone may also be influential.

Disease can also cause psychiatric symptoms like depression, anxiety, paranoia and hallucinations. These experiences can lead to stressful and challenging behaviors.
