The Cost of Alzheimer's Services

From , former About.com Guide

About.com Health's Disease and Condition content is reviewed by the Medical Review Board

According to the Alzheimer's Association's 2009 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures, Alzheimer's disease triples healthcare costs for those over the age of 65. Medicaid costs alone are over 9 times higher for Alzheimer's care. Persons with Alzheimer's disease are the highest consumers of hospital care, long term care, Medicaid, and Medicare, and they often have concurrent conditions such as heart disease or diabetes which raise costs further. The message is that more attention must be given to Alzheimer's disease in regard to research, treatment, and financial assistance for services.
