Medication Abuse and Alzheimer's disease

Medication has its place in the treatment of many conditions and diseases. When psychiatric medications, such as tranquillizers are used for Alzheimer's disease, it is important to remember that they cannot work in isolation to other therapeutic activities. Medication should just be one part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Modern society often places a disproportionate belief in the value of medication. These beliefs exist in relation to Alzheimer's in the hope that drugs are available that will either cure or make a significant difference in the care of someone with Alzheimer's disease.

Medication can help, especially when behavior puts the independence and best care of an individual at risk. But it is rarely the total answer.

Tranquilizers, except in extraordinary or emergency circumstances, should never be used as a chemical restraint. Challenging behaviors or problem behaviors exhibited by someone with Alzheimer's often require the help of experts in that field. The use of medications are just one way of improving the life of someone with Alzheimer's and their caregivers.

Seek Help from Experts
Seeking outside help from healthcare practitioners such as doctors, psychologists, psychiatrists, mental health nurses, etc, can provide you with support, give you an independent assessment and evaluation and often suggest more effective treatments.

A thoughtful treatment plan that incorporates activities, medication and behavioral treatments will be the most effective. Behavior cannot be looked at in isolation. Social relationships and physical health have to be considered, the whole person interacting within their enviornment.Treatment plans need to be carefully monitored and respond to the needs of each individual and his or her family.
