Definition:

Apathy is a state of little or no motivation, initiative or drive. Usually the person has a lack of interest in previously enjoyed activities, and may be content to do little or nothing with his time.

Apathy is extremely common in Alzheimer's disease, and may or may not indicate depression. Apathy in a patient can be extremely frustrating for caregivers, but there are behavioral interventions worth trying.
