Ask the Next President to Make Alzheimer's Disease a Priority

Tuesday November 4, 2008
Photo © MicrosoftThe Alzheimer's Association is seeking 50,000 signatures for its Proclamation to the Next President. The proclamation details the urgency of finding a way to cure or prevent Alzheimer's disease before it hits 1 in 8 baby boomers and overwhelms several million additional families across the country.

The proclamation also outlines specific steps for the next President to take in order to address Alzheimer's disease as a public health crisis:

  • Increase funding for Alzheimer's research (an upfront cost that will result in monumental cost savings in the long run)
  • Access to affordable health care insurance, especially for those with early-onset Alzheimer's disease
  • A revamped Medicare program more sensitive to the needs of people with Alzheimer's
  • More and better caregiver support services and long-term care coverage for families facing Alzheimer's disease
The Alzheimer's Association will deliver the proclamation with all accompanying signatures in January, after Inauguration Day. Regardless of which presidential candidate you voted for (and you did vote, right?), I think we can all agree that Alzheimer's disease needs to be a priority on our next leader's agenda.
