Definition: Anything that happens before a challenging behavior or "sets the stage" for it to occur.

Antecedents can be internal (thoughts or physical feelings of the person with Alzheimer's) or external (characteristics of the environment).

Antecedent is the "A" in the A-B-C Behavior Chain ("B" is for behavior, while "C" is for consequence).

Examples:
Some examples of antecedents include physical discomfort like hunger or pain, loud noises, room temperatures that are too hot or cold, a chaotic environment, fluorescent lights, unfamiliar surroundings, tasks that are overwhelming, or frustration over not being able to communicate an idea or need.
